Galaga '88 Rom No.5 Error

I picked up Namco System 1 Galaga ’88 from eBay. The game booted, but the screen was flipped in the wrong orientation. The service menu (self-test) offers a setting to flip the screen orientation. To enter sel-test flip dip 1 to the on position (you can flip dip 1 on or off while game is booted). When I attempted to enter the service menu the game failed the self-test and I was unable to make any changes to settings. The error displayed was Rom No.5 Error 16FF 0000 0000 0000.

After inspecting the board I found jumper JP3 sheared off. JP3 is used to configure the rom type, most likely for Rom 5 which is located at P10 on the rom PCB. On the under side of the board someone had tried to use solder to jumper the pins. After looking at some photos of other Galaga ’88 boards it looked like the solder fix was bridging the wrong pins.

I removed the broken JP3 headers and replaced with standard 2.54mm PCB headers and jumper cap. The board booted and passed all tests. I was able to flip the screen orientation and turned dip 1 off to boot the game.
